1. Ensure they’re the right fit for your company.

Before you tell someone they’re hired, you want to first make sure you’re making the right decision. Make sure their background, personality and skills are exactly what you’re looking for. Ask them the right questions during the interview to ensure they not only want the job, but also will succeed at it. You should also allow other members of the company to partake in the hiring process to ensure the individual will get along well with your current team. You’ll also want to make sure the individual plans on staying at your company for the long haul so that you’re not constantly filling this role. When you hire the right person, it will benefit your business.

2. Create an employee handbook.

Creating an employee handbook can serve as a contract between you and your employees, and it can help ensure your employees know the rules of the company as well as what’s expected of them. Be as detailed as you possibly can in your handbook and require your employees to sign an agreement that said they read and agree to the information provided in the handbook. This way, if your employee violates any of your rules, you will have grounds for termination.

3. Prepare the correct paperwork.

Every state has different laws regarding their hiring process, and it’s very important that you prepare all the correct paperwork before you fulfill the hiring process. This may include everything from tax forms to benefit forms to direct deposit. Your HR department should be knowledgeable on what forms and paperwork needs to be completed in order to finish the hiring process, or you can always check your state’s website for more details.

4. Check the employee’s legal status.

Some people are not currently allowed to work in the country (or possibly in your state), so make sure that you check the immigration status of international employees as well as the backgrounds of any potential employee. This will let you know if they have the government clearance to work for your company or not. Hiring someone who is not legally able to work in your state or country could pose many problems for your business, so take the extra step to ensure you’re making a smart hiring decision.

5. Implement a training procedure.

The first day on the job is never fun, but you can make the transition run smoothly by having a training procedure in place. First, you should ensure that the employee spends the first day completing all necessary paperwork and reading the employee handbook. This will get them all set up with your business.

You should also use this first day to get them acclimated to company software programs. Give them access to their computer as well as their usernames and passwords. Allow them to play around for a bit to become comfortable.

Once you get this out of the way, be sure to train the individual on their job responsibilities. Allow them to learn from someone knowledgeable and patient, as starting a new job can be overwhelming.
